Classic Parable: The Mediator


In 1977, Elder Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles gave a parable regarding the tension between justice and mercy. I came across it again this week and highly recommend it.

The Visiting Professor


Sam stopped on his way down the hall in the sciences building when a flyer tacked to the bulletin board caught his attention. He dodged closer to it as other students came up behind him, trying to get to their next classes. The flyer announced that a visiting professor, Dr. Balthasar Katzenbacher, would be giving a lecture on the university campus next month. Dr. Katzenbacher was a world-respected biochemist—but you’d think they’d have been able to include a photo of the guy. Maybe he was a recluse. Nevertheless, Sam’s interest was piqued, and he scribbled a reminder in his notebook.

The River Crossing


Michaela waited for the gunshot that would signal the beginning of the race. Her Arabian mare, Athena, pawed at the ground but held her position.

They had been training together for this cross-country race for weeks, and now all that practice was going to pay off. She knew it as surely as Athena knew what to do when the gun went off. Michaela had scouted the route ahead of time so she would know every bend, every rise, every dip. These scenes flashed through her mind in succession. Her heart was already pounding.

The Crimson Sweater


As springtime replaced winter one year, a certain six-year-old girl received a bright crimson sweater. Her mother intended for her to wear it when outdoors while temperatures could still be on the cool side. But it didn’t take long for the girl to misplace the sweater, casting it off one afternoon when it grew too warm to wear it while she played in the backyard. She left it in a corner of the yard where family members seldom went. The weather continued to be warm enough that the girl forgot about her sweater. In her busyness, and without a need for it, her mother forgot about it too.
