Tanya came home from her humanitarian trip to Africa fired up about helping people. Several months bringing relief to others who were suffering had changed her goals for her life. She had an idea for a nonprofit organization, but she didn’t really know where to start or how to raise the money needed.

In 1977, Elder Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles gave a parable regarding the tension between justice and mercy. I came across it again this week and highly recommend it.

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise to people that life is often compared to a journey. It has a beginning and an ending, and we don’t finish where we started. Particularly when it comes to our spiritual progress.

Sam stopped on his way down the hall in the sciences building when a flyer tacked to the bulletin board caught his attention. He dodged closer to it as other students came up behind him, trying to get to their next classes. The flyer announced that a visiting professor, Dr. Balthasar Katzenbacher, would be giving a lecture on the university campus next month. Dr. Katzenbacher was a world-respected biochemist—but you’d think they’d have been able to include a photo of the guy. Maybe he was a recluse. Nevertheless, Sam’s interest was piqued, and he scribbled a reminder in his notebook.
“Do what feels good.” This phrase has been used to advertise products or promote a lifestyle based on pleasure seeking. This exact statement may not be prevalent in these words as much now as it was in the not-distant past, but the underlying philosophy remains.
It’s a worldly counterfeit to an eternal truth.
