Dr. Moore finished conversing with one patient and then moved on to exam room #4. Her next patient was Lauren, a middle-aged woman who seldom had need for an appointment due to her generally healthy lifestyle and condition. The doctor knocked lightly on the door and walked in. She and Lauren greeted each other and engaged in some small talk.
“What are you here to talk about today?” Dr. Moore asked, looking at her tablet where she had pulled up Lauren’s records. She frowned.

Today’s post is probably more direct than the tack I usually take with interpretation posts. Perhaps ironically, it will follow the flow of my thoughts somewhat, so here we go.
The mayor of a certain city announced a community treasure hunt. It began with a publicly announced clue that pointed to the location of another clue. If participants followed the clues correctly, they would lead to the prize. The winner would be featured in the news and get to keep the treasure, which included some cash.
One of the great lessons we live life to learn is to place those things that are eternal in priority over those that are transitory. The temptation to fix our attention on and trust in things that give more immediate, tangible rewards can be strong—even irresistible.
Max pulled his notepad and pen from his apron pocket and approached the woman sitting alone at a table in the restaurant. The lamp over the table cast a halo over her arms and the laminated menu in her hands. He had seen her here before, but Max was a new enough employee that he hadn’t learned her name. “Hi, I’m Max,” he told her when he reached her. “Do you want to start with a drink? Or are you ready to order?”
