The Exercise Videos

Ed’s doctor told him he needed to lose weight so as to mitigate some health problems that he was developing and to reduce the likelihood of problems that hadn’t happened yet. But Ed detested aching and burning muscles almost as much as he despised having sweat pouring down his face.

The doctor shrugged at his question of what was the best way to get started. “Get some exercise videos. Just do something. Anything.

Ed thought about it on his way home and decided to do just what the doctor ordered.

In his TV room, he pulled up YouTube on his streaming service and found a video by a celebrity fitness expert. Before playing the video, he went to his kitchen and grabbed a drink and some snacks. Then he sat on the couch, pointed his remote control at the TV, and pressed Play.

He watched and listened closely as the expert explained and demonstrated some exercises. That looks like hard work, thought Ed as he chewed a handful of chips.

He watched one or two videos each day for several weeks and then saw his doctor again.

When the doctor had looked at Ed’s weight measurement today compared to the last visit, he raised an eyebrow. “We haven’t made any progress here. Did you do any of the things we talked about?”

Ed nodded. “Yeah, I watched some workout videos like you said.”

The doctor squinted a little and leaned forward. “Did you just watch them? Or did you, you know … do the exercises?”

“Well … I watched them, yeah. They were pretty boring, I gotta tell you.”

Shaking his head, the doctor replied, “Of course. They aren’t going to mean a thing either if you don’t do the exercises, Ed.” He smiled. “Knowing what to do isn’t enough. So get off that couch, power through the sweat and the burn, and get that body moving. You won’t see any positive changes to your health until you do.”
